How to
Avoid Being in an Accident
There may be times
when an accident cannot be avoided despite a
driver's best efforts, however following the tips
below will make you a safer driver and improve your
chances of staying out of an unnecessary
accident:
Keep your eyes
on the road in front of you.
- Don't be
distracted with opening the glove box, changing
radio channels, etc. If you take your eyes off
the road, you drastically increase your chances
of an accident.
Do not use
handheld cell phones while driving.
- Voice activated
hands free devices allow you to keep both hands
on the wheel.
- Do not talk on
any phone in heavy traffic or bad
weather.
- Do not text
while driving.
Do not drive
when you are tired.
- Over 100,000
accidents each year are a result of "tired
drivers".
Avoid driving in
bad weather. If you must to drive in snow or rain,
consider these factors:
- Your tires
should have at least 6/32 of an inch of
tread.
- High
performance tires have poor traction because
they have minimal tread.
Keep a clear
view.
- Use the air
conditioner to clear condensation from your
windows.
- Replace your
windshield wipers if they are not working
properly.
Be aware of
blinds spots.
- Know your blind
spots. Do not just rely on your mirrors when
changing lanes.
- Know the blind
spots of others on the road.
Do not use the
left lane on multilane roads more than
necessary.
- The left lane
tends to not have a shoulder and allows little
"escape" if something goes wrong around
you.
Avoid distracted
drivers.
- If another
driver is weaving back and forth, they may be
drunk, tired, or pre-occupied.
Know the vehicle
you are driving.
- If you drive a
car that you are unfamiliar with, be extra
careful. Cars react differently. A van will not
handle as well as a sports car.
Avoid driving at
night.
- Vision is
impaired at night.
- Be extra
cautious "late night" when more intoxicated
drivers are on the road.
Do not drink and
drive.
- If you have
been drinking, wait until your blood alcohol
level is below the legal limit or find
alternative means of transportation.
- Pre-planning,
such as a designated driver, makes avoiding a
driving drunk easy to achieve.
